Pinnannousu: A Robotic Ice Sculpture with a Global Warning

Art Meets Technology in Jussi Angesleva's Latest Installation

In an era where art converges with technology, Jussi Angesleva's Pinnannousu stands as a testament to this fusion, delivering a powerful environmental message through a robotic ice sculpture performance.

At the intersection of art and innovation, Jussi Angesleva's Pinnannousu emerges as a compelling narrative on climate change. The installation, a robotic ice sculpture, is not merely a visual spectacle but a poignant reminder of the planet's fragility. Angesleva harnesses the precision of an industrial robot and the unpredictability of melting ice to craft a lens that projects a haunting "+2℃" warning onto a wall, symbolizing the critical threshold of global temperature rise.

The uniqueness of Pinnannousu lies in its transient nature and the stark contrast it draws between technological optimism and the ephemeral state of our environment. The industrial robot, equipped with a drill and flashlight, meticulously carves a block of ice into a computational lens. This lens then captures and refracts light to spell out the dire message, an artistic interpretation of data visualization that resonates with viewers on an emotional level.

Angesleva's creation was brought to life through a blend of algorithmic design and manual craftsmanship. The Universal Robots UR5 arm, high-power LED flashlights, and a Raspberry Pi for timelapse capture were instrumental in realizing the vision. The clear ice blocks, measuring 100 x 50 x 25 cm, were transformed over the course of several weeks, their gradual melting captured in a timelapse video, adding a temporal dimension to the experience.

The Pinnannousu installation is a performance in two acts: the robotic carving and the subsequent melting of the ice, each stage meticulously documented to capture the fleeting beauty of the sculpture. Exhibited at the Sapporo International Art Festival, the work was developed and displayed in the unique setting of the Snow Storage of the Glass Pyramid at Moerenuma Park, Sapporo, Japan, from January 20 to February 11.

Behind the scenes, the project was a culmination of global collaboration and research. The challenge of marrying the precise demands of computational design with the organic nature of ice required a delicate balance, embracing the accidental to achieve elegance. The distributed team faced the additional hurdle of coordinating their efforts virtually, a testament to the power of technology in overcoming geographic barriers.

In conclusion, Pinnannousu is not just an art installation; it is a dialogue between humanity and nature, a high-tech performance that serves as a stark reminder of the environmental challenges we face. The sculpture's transient beauty and the urgency of its message leave a lasting impression, urging viewers to reflect on the impact of climate change and the role of innovation in addressing it. As a Golden A' Design Award winner, Pinnannousu stands as a beacon of creative excellence, a harmonious blend of art, science, and environmental advocacy.
